In a summer full of cancellations, Theatre Northwest intends to move forward with its summer sewing camp.
Summer Sewing Camps have been going on at Theatre NorthWest for the past three summers, and have taught children, youth, and adults sewing skills.
Sewing fundamentals play a critical part in theatrical costume design, making the two a logical connection for Theatre Northwest’s Executive Director Marnie Hamagami.
“Our camps are inherently based on an individual activity. So, we felt that moving forward was the right thing for us,” said Hamagami.
She added unlike athletic day camps, sewing is well-suited to physical distancing.
Only one program is aged-based, the “Sewing for young children” class, which is suited for children 7-10 years old.
All other programs are based on skill level: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
Theatre Northwest also offers drop-in sessions, where individuals can bring in projects or simply work with experts.
This year Prince George local Samantha Perrin will be leading the classes.
A Kelly Road Secondary School graduate, Perrin is from Grant MacEwen University’s theatre production programme.
“I am really looking forward to sharing my love for sewing,” said Perrin, who continued, “I have been sewing for years, and can hardly wait to start camps.”
