It was competitive but the UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team lost its first ever Canada West playoff game. The UBC Thunderbirds outscored the visiting Timberwolves 83-77 before 616 fans. Rhys Elliott led UNBC with 21 points while Prince George native Nolan Hanson added 13 points off the bench. The Thunderbirds led 45-38 at the half and 66-55 after three quarters. Game two in the best of three series will be played tonight at UBC with a third game, if needed, on Saturday.

–UNBC forward Devin McMurtry captured the Canada West Student-Athlete Community Service Award. McMurtry is the first UNBC student-athlete to receive a major Canada West award. He is now a finalist for the national Ken Shields award which goes to a player who exhibits outstanding achievement in the areas of basketball, academics, and community involvement.

–Both College Heights and Duchess Park are 1-2 at the BC Junior Boys Basketball Championship in Langley. College Heights lost 75-37 to Brentwood College Thursday after splitting its first two games Wednesday: a 63-45 loss to Sentinel followed by a 41-38 victory over Fleetwood Park. Duchess beat Salmon Arm 57-50 Thursday after dropping a pair Wednesday: 66-36 to St. Georges and 65-45 to Notre Dame.

–The Prince George Cougars visit the Seattle Thunderbirds tonight and the Everett Silvertips Saturday. The Cougars are three points behind the Vancouver Giants for 3rd place in the BC Division and five points back of the Tri-City Americans for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings host the Langley Rivermen tonight and Saturday to conclude their regular season. The same two teams will meet again Tuesday to start the playoffs. The Rivermen have the edge for 2nd place and home ice advantage in the BCHL Mainland Division, three points ahead of the Spruce Kings.

–The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars will wrap up their regular season in the BCMML when they visit the Okanagan Rockets Saturday and Sunday in Kelowna. The (29-7-2) Cougars have clinched first place. The (22-12-4) Rockets are in 4th place.
