In a nutshell:
NHL:
–After a 16 season NHL career, former PG Cougars defenceman Dan Hamhuis of Smithers has announced his retirement at age 37. Hamhuis, who spent his final two seasons with the Nashville Predators, played in 1,148 NHL regular-season games which is 148th on the all-time list. His career included a gold medal with Canada at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and being part of the Vancouver Canucks team that reached the 2011 Stanley Cup final. Hamhuis spent his four-year junior career with the Cougars and is now part-owner of the WHL team.
–The Vancouver Canucks put a four-game win streak on the line when they play the St. Louis Blues today (3:30 PM PT). The Canucks won the opener in the best-of-7 Conference quarterfinal series 5-2.
–In other Stanley Cup playoff action today (Friday): Montreal faces Philadelphia (Noon), Colorado is up against Arizona (11 AM), Washington will battle the NY Islanders (5:00) and Calgary meets Dallas for the second straight night (7:30).
–The Stars scored in the final minute to beat the Flames 5-4 Thursday to tie the series 1-1. Elsewhere, Vegas edged Chicago 4-3 in OT to grab a 2-0 lead, Carolina got by Boston 3-2 to square the series 1-1 and Columbus beat Tampa 3-1 to tie that series 1-1.
–Canadiens head coach Claude Julien has been hospitalized after experiencing chest pains. The Habs do not expect him to be back this series vs. the Flyers. Assistant coach Kirk Muller will take over head coaching duties on an interim basis.
NBA:
–The Toronto Raptors close out their regular season when they play the Denver Nuggets today (10:30 AM PT).
The Raptors, 6-1 in the restart and 52-19 overall, will face the Brooklyn Nets on Monday (1:00 PM PT) in the first round of the playoffs.
–The Portland Trail Blazers will battle the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday to see which team will meet the LA Lakers in the post-season. (If the Grizzlies win they will meet again on Sunday) Because the Trail Blazers finished 8th and the Grizzlies 9th, Portland needs just one victory to advance while Memphis must win twice to keep its season going. Portland won its last regular-season game 134-133 over Brooklyn to qualify.
MLB:
–The 6-and-9 Toronto Blue Jays host the Tampa Bay Rays today (3:35 PM PT) in Buffalo. The 12-8 Rays have won six straight and are tied with the NY Yankees.
