HARTLEY’S SPORTS SHORTS: SATURDAY, AUGUST 15

(As of 12:05 a.m.) by Hartley Miller

In a nutshell:

NHL:

–Captain Bo Horvat scored twice, one in overtime on a breakaway, to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-3 victory over the  defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues. The Canucks, who lead the best-of-7 series 2-0, have won five straight. Game three will be played Sunday night at 7:30 (PT) in Edmonton.

–Cam Talbot stopped 35 shots for the Calgary Flames in a 2-0 win over the Dallas Stars. The Flames are up 2-1 with game four Sunday (11 AM PT).

–Carey Price made 30 saves for the seventh postseason shutout of his career in the Montreal Canadiens 5-0 skunking of the Philadelphia Flyers. The series is even 1-1 with game three Sunday at 5 PM.

NBA:

–The Toronto Raptors closed out their regular season with a 117-109 victory over the Denver Nuggets. The Raptors, 7-1 in the restart and 53-19 overall, will face the Brooklyn Nets on Monday (1:00 PM PT) in the first round of the playoffs.

–The Portland Trail Blazers meet the Memphis Grizzlies today (Saturday) at 11:30am PT as the two teams battle to see who will meet the LA Lakers in the postseason. If the Grizzlies win they will face each other again on Sunday. Because the Trail Blazers finished 8th and the Grizzlies 9th in the Western Conference, Portland needs just one victory to advance while Memphis must win twice to keep its season going.

MLB:

–The Toronto Blue Jays banged out six homers, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 12-4. The loss ended the Rays six-game win streak. The 7-and-9 Jays host the 12-9 Rays again today (3:35 PM PT) in Buffalo.
