The UNBC Timberwolves are going to have to wait a little longer to see if their basketball programs take to the court this season.

Canada West announced today (Friday) it will delay the decision on whether second term sports proceeds in the New Year until November 2.

The initial deadline for a decision was scheduled for October 8th.

Athletic Director Loralyn Murdoch spoke with MyPGNow.com.

“We decided as a conference it might be better to wait a little bit and align ourselves nationally with other conferences and with U-Sport.”

Following feedback from student-athletes, the conference’s Board of Directors voted to any proceedings, allowing as much time as possible to assess the feasibility of conference play returning given the evolving COVID-19 environment.

When asked if taking certain elements similar to professional sports leagues Murdoch said they are leaving that decision to a pair of taskforces.

“Those two groups are working really hard to stay up to date and gather as much information as they can on how a league can progress and at the end of the day, we are going to have to make a decision if we can follow all those parameters and protocols to have a competitive regional season.”

The announcement pertains to:

  • Basketball (men’s and women’s)
  • hockey (men’s and women’s),
  • volleyball (men’s and women’s),
  • Rugby 7s (women’s)
  • Along with Canada West championships in curling (men’s and women’s) swimming (men’s and women’s), track and field (men’s and women’s), and wrestling (men’s and women’s)
