The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is advising residents to remain ‘Fire-smart’ despite the end of BC’s wildfire season coming to an end.
Anita de Dreu, Emergency Services Coordinator for the Regional District for Fraser-Fort George said, “although the risk for wildfire is lower, it’s still the perfect opportunity for us to engage in Fire smart activities around our homes and in our yards.”
With the substantial amount of rain seen across BC, the wildfire risk in the province was considerably lower this year, but the fall season presents its own set of wildfire risk factors.
“Accumulation of leaves in the fall can accumulate in little corners and are forgotten,” explained de Dreu, “those become a perfect fuel source for any embers from a fire that is nearby or even far away.”
She also noted that keeping firewood close to the home, especially when it is dry can act as a perfect fuel source to create a devastating home fire.
“It’s a perfect time right now to check areas around the home to ensure that we are reducing our wildfire risk and the risk of loss due to fire around the home.”
The zone extending 1.5 – 10 meters from you home should be a fire-resistant zone.
