Colder than average winter on the horizon for Prince George

As Prince George experiences the first snowfall of the season, Environment Canada is expecting the city will see a colder-than-usual winter.

“A system actually went through last night (Sunday) and this morning and brought us some persistent snow, 5-10 centimetres,” explained Carmen Hartt, Meteorologist at Environment Canada.

Prince George’s daily highs are lower than normal, keeping the snow from melting as quickly as previous years.

“This winter it is going to be quite cold, looking at the shorter range models we have a cold signal and even looking at a longer range there are indicators that it will be a colder winter this year,” Hartt explained.

She noted that with the colder temperatures, the city can expect more snow and fewer warm spells.

“Our temperatures are going to stay quite cool for the week, about 5 degrees cooler than normal,” she added, “but there will be sun this week with just a few flurries.”

The colder weather has been translating into the evening as well, with the overnight lows in the negative single digits, quite colder than previous years where it stood around zero.
