Smoke on the water; wood burning project near West Lake starts tomorrow

The BC Wildfire Service and BC Timber Sales will be burning about 100 piles of wood debris, about 25km Southwest of Prince George.

The project will start tomorrow (Wednesday) along West Lake Estates Road on the shore of West Lake and will be continuing periodically until the spring of 2021.

“These piles are the result of logging activities and consist of unsalvageable wood debris,” explained Rachelle Winsor, Information officer with the Prince George Fire Centre.

According to BC Wildfire, the burning will help decrease the risk of future wildfires in the area by reducing accumulations of surface fuels.

“The burning is subject to weather conditions and whatever smoke control regulations are in place,” noted Rachelle Winsor, Information officer with the Prince George Fire Centre.

Both the BC Wildfire Service and BC Timber Sales personnel will be on-site to control and monitor the fires.

According to BC Wildfire, regulations are in place to limit the impact on air quality in nearby communities.

“Smoke may be visible from Prince George and surrounding areas such as the West Lake community out there,” Winsor explained.
