Northern health urges Prince George to get a flu shot

Northern Health is urging residents of Prince George to get a flu shot, claiming it is more important than ever to be immune to influenza.

“This year getting your flu vaccine is incredibly important because it will decrease the amount of illness in our community in a time when we really need to make sure our health care resources are available,” explained Rakel Kling, Medical Health Officer at Northern Health.

With a lower amount of influenza cases being handled by Northern Health, more resources will be available to help those with other illnesses, including COVID-19.

“There are a lot less bugs floating around right now because of physical distancing guidelines in place,” she explained, “that being said, we don’t know what’s going to happen this flu season so we really need to be prepared.”

Both COVID-19 and the flu share a number of similar symptoms according to Kling, “so if you do have symptoms we are urging people to go online and take the test to determine whether or not you should get tested.”

Kling recommends booking an appointment for a flu vaccine around 2 weeks ahead of time.

“Because of COVID-19, most vaccine providers are taking extra steps to make sure that people are safe and not exposed to each other,” explained Kling.

Most Northern Health flu clinics will start the first week of November, and flu vaccines will also be available from pharmacies and doctor’s offices throughout the region.
