New ‘Claiming Spaces’ project aims to inspire and retain female leaders in Prince George

The City of Prince George and Inspiring Women Among Us (IWAU) have teamed up on a project aiming to encourage more women to get involved in leadership positions in their respective fields.

The suite of online resources called Claiming Spaces, results from funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).

20 demonstration projects were funded, from across Canada.

Funding compensated two UNBC graduate students: PhD (NRES) student Penina Harding, and MNRES (Geography) student Annie Pumphrey, and allowed for the production of the project.

The FCM’s Toward Parity Framework in Action is designed to fund community projects to encourage and retain women leaders.

“The call for participation fit well with IWAU goals and objectives, and City of Prince George interest in diverse leadership. Originally, our exciting plan was to host 5-6 youth-directed in-person workshops. These would be voluntary “à la carte” engagement/training/active workshops that combined social and informal aspects with training opportunities,” said Pumphrey.

Centered on access to leaders, skills building, training, and networking—the idea was to create a new sense of community via workshops designed to showcase and build upon local leadership.

The organization was looking to also collaborate with SD57 and UNBC, but those plans were put on hold due to job action at the university followed by Covid-19 restrictions.

The Claiming Spaces resource page features interviews with local politicians and hopes to amplify voices of key Indigenous youth leaders.

A viewing party will be held during IWAU 2020, on Tuesday, Nov. 24th, at 5:30 pm.

IWAU 2020 will be an all-online/remote series of events this year, and will run from Nov. 18-25th.
