The 5th Annual Plaid Friday event takes place in Downtown Prince George tomorrow (Friday) as the community bands together to shop local.

Downtown PG Executive Director, Colleen Van Mook spoke with MyPGNow.com.

“We do want to support our downtown businesses all year round but this is an opportunity to make some fun out of a day that really tends to kick off the holiday shopping season and it’s an opportunity to remind people that local businesses are a really strong part of our economy.”

“What Plaid Friday is to us is the opportunity to celebrate with our local downtown businesses and Plaid Friday is the alternative to the other special Friday called Black Friday.”

Plaid Friday began in Oakland, California and the pattern represents the individual threads of small businesses banding together and creating a strong fabric within the community.

“And that’s what we think of our downtown businesses, they are very diverse, very creative, independent and local, making a strong economy. Our stores and our restaurants are still open downtown and if you wear plaid, not only are you showing your support but you may even be rewarded with some special deals within our stores and restaurants in downtown Prince George,” added Van Mook.

In addition, the Prince George Chamber of Commerce has launched their #HolidayPG campaign in an attempt to support local businesses this holiday season.

From Friday (Nov 27th) to December 17th, the Chamber of Commerce ‘Elves’ will be sweeping local businesses across the City in the search for shoppers to give local business gift cards to.
