Major projects keeping northern economy resilient, businesses open : PG Chamber CEO

Prince George Chamber of Commerce CEO Todd Corrigall stated resource-based communities in our region have been more resilient during the pandemic.

According to the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC Check-Up Invest report, there were 66-hundred fewer businesses active last October when compared to pre-crisis levels, with many of those closures taking place in the Lower Mainland.

Corrigall told MyPGNow.com a lot of major projects in the north were able to resume, which enabled our economy to keep moving.

“Coastal Gas Link continues to move forward, LNG Canada is moving forward and we are seeing historically high lumber prices, which is great for our timber community. So, there is still money that is moving through our economy and is a direct reflection as to why we have been more sustainable than others (parts of BC).”

“I think we are seeing more significant losses in the Lower Mainland and the Okanagan.”

But, Corrigall would like to see improvements made to the BC Small Business Recovery Grant, which expires at the end of April.

“And that needs to be completely revamped, we’ve heard the application process is too onerous, costly, and requires small businesses to track information for bookkeepers and auditors that they wouldn’t normally keep. It’s a very cost-prohibitive and cumbersome process so we need to find a better way to get the money to the businesses that are struggling so that we can make sure in Prince George, we can remain resilient.”
