A warm start to spring on tap for Prince George

A near-average spring is anticipated for Prince George according to Environment Canada.

The average high for this time of year is around plus three, but daytime highs could reach eight or nine degrees celsius by the end of the week.

However, Meteorologist, Doug Lundquist told MyPGNow.com the northern capital can expect more freeze-thaw cycles.

“The roads can freeze up at night especially if we get some rain or wetness in the afternoon and it clears up in the evening that can be really treacherous with black ice so it is that season of driving carefully especially during nighttime hours.”

He also noted even little things like the position of the sun can make a huge difference this time of year.

“The sun has a lot more power than it did just a couple of months ago as it is much higher at high noon. You can see it in the sky that was way higher than earlier in the year, it’s all adding up to making things a little warmer and the overnight lows over the next few days will be a bit warmer between zero and plus two, usually for this time of year it is around minus seven.”

In February, Prince George was five degrees below-average where the temperature was closer to minus ten – the normal high for that time of year is around minus five.

However, the northern capital still experienced a fairly balmy winter according to Lundquist.
