Prince George COVID-19 cases on the rise

Prince George saw 39 cases of COVID-19 between March 14th to 20th, which is up by 6 from the week prior.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, the PG area is now reporting 5.1 to 10.0 cases per 100,000 people.

However, Peace River South saw an even more severe uptick in cases, nearly tripling their identified cases this week after seeing 74 compared to the prior week of 26.

Peace River North’s numbers went down during this time period after seeing 25 or 2 fewer than the week before.

Meanwhile, Prince Rupert has scaled up vaccinations and is giving anyone aged 18 and up their first dose.

However, those efforts have yet to make much of an impact as the region saw an additional 113 cases this week, only down by 4 from the previous mark.

Both Quesnel and the Nechako region only saw one case during this timeframe, which is the first case Quesnel has seen in three weeks.

Smithers also took quite the hit, seeing 19 cases which is nearly ten times the amount of cases identified compared to the week before.

Prince Rupert’s neighbours, Terrace and Kitimat are also dealing with an increase in cases, seeing 29 and 20 respectively.

Within the past week, two Prince George schools have been flagged for COVID-19 exposures by the BCCDC.

As BC’s COVID-19 Immunization Plan gains momentum, Northern Health residents are being urged to visit the NH website for their community vaccination schedule.
