Provincial grant keeping dangerous plants away

The Northwest Invasive Plant Council will keep the area weed-free with a little help from the Province.

The Council received $294,000 to raise awareness of invasive plants and to survey and treat problem sites.

Council Member Penny Adams says problem plants can affect more than just wildlife.

“They can destroy natural ecosystems and, in some cases when we have a plant like Japanese knotweed, it’s root structure is such that it can basically go through any crack it finds in concrete, asphalt, and whatever so it’s also a problem for infrastructure,” she says.

This is one of 31 Provincial grants given to local governments and committees to stop the spread of dangerous plants.
