CASEY aiming to end Sexual Abuse in the North

One group is headed all over the North to prevent the sexual exploitation of children.

The “Communities Against Sexual Exploitation of Youth,” or “CASEY,” wants kids to be safe. It’s teaching kids about sex abuse, including sexting, and has held 15 school presentations and 6 workshops since November.

Program Coordinator Laurel Collins says it’s important to speak up if you’ve been sexually abused.

“The main thing that I hear over and over again, especially from the adults, is that they wish they got help sooner, they wish they spoke up sooner,” she says.

She knows it’s a sensitive subject, but says sexual abuse needs to be talked about.

“It’s something that’s still, unfortunately, something people think needs to be a secret and that doesn’t heal anybody and actually hurts whole communities.”

The group has been helping youth from Prince George north to the Yukon border, and from the Alberta border to Haida Gwaii (hi-dah GWHY)
