NHL

Travis Green will return as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported a contract extension has been agreed to and is expected to be finalized this morning.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is out indefinitely after taking an accidental knee to head from Canadians forward Corey Perry during last night’s 2-1 loss in Game One of their quarter-final series.


NHL Playoffs

Paul Byron scored short-handed with under eight minutes left and Carey Price made 35 saves as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 to take a 1-0 lead in their first-round series.

Elsewhere, the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Minnesota Wild 5-2 to take a 2-1 series lead.

The Florida Panthers came back from a 2 goal 3rd-period deficit for a 6-5 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tampa leads that series 2-1 and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Islanders 5-4 to take a 2-1 lead in their series.

Four more games are on tap tonight.

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins – Game 4 (Bruins lead series 2-1, puck drop is 3:30)

Carolina Hurricanes at Nashville Predators – Game 3 (Canes lead series 2-0, puck drop is 4:00)

Winnipeg Jets at Edmonton Oilers – Game 2 (Jets lead best-of-seven 1-0, puck drop is 6pm Pacific)

Colorado Avalanche at St. Louis Blues – Game 3 (Avs lead series 2-0, puck drop is 6:30 pm)

The Boston Red Sox rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-7.
Toronto (23-19) welcomes the Tampa Bay Rays (26-19) with first pitch at 4:37 PT from Dunedin, Florida.


NBA

The Washington Wizards clinched the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Bradley Beal had 25 points and a Russell Westbrook double-double paced them to a 142-115 win over the Indiana Pacers in a one-game play on Thursday.

The Wizards now play the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference quarter-finals with Game one on Sunday.

In the West, Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors tackle the Memphis Grizzlies tonight. The winner of that play-in game takes on the top-ranked Utah Jazz.


PGA

Corey Conners shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-shot first-round lead at the PGA Championship.

Conners becomes the first Canadian to lead after any round of a men’s major championship since Mike Weir was on top of the leaderboard after Round 1 of the 2009 U.S. Open.


Mixed Curling

Canada has clinched a spot in the mixed doubles curling competition in next year’s Beijing Olympics.

Kerri Einarson and Brad Gushue wrapped up the berth with a 7-6 win over the Czech Republic on Friday at the world mixed doubles championship.

The win pushed Einarson and Gushue to 6-2 and locked up a top-seven finish at the 20-team event, the cutoff for an Olympic berth.
