Carney Street Lacrosse Box to open next month?

Lacrosse players in Prince George might have a place to play after all.

Organizers with the Senior Lacrosse League are hoping to re-open the Carney Street Box just in time for summer.

PGSL Commissioner, Don Wittmeier recently spoke with MyPGNow.com.

“We are looking forward to having it open by June 20th so that lacrosse players can have a chance to play outside.”

He added the facility has no shortage of history for those deeply entrenched in the lacrosse community.

“It’s one of a kind. We need it to promote the sport as it’s right in the centre of the city. It’s a growing spot with the new Fire Hall so people can see the sport outside.”

Wittmeier believes it would fill a void after the Senior League season was cancelled for the second consecutive year due to the pandemic.

However, a long road to recovery awaits the sport once play is allowed to resume.

“It’s going to be hard to see how many people will come back to the game as I think we are going to lose a few. We were on an uprise and I think we will go back to where we were and we have to rebuild.”
