Olympics:

Canada has its second gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Weightlifter Maude Charron won the women’s 64-kilogram weight class.

In other Canadian results:

Swimmer Kylie Masse captured silver in the women’s 100-metre backstroke.

In women’s judo, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard earned bronze in the under-63 kilogram category.

Canada’s women’s softball team won its first-ever medal in the sport, defeating Mexico, 3-2, to take the bronze.

Canadian athletes have two gold, three silver, and three bronze for a total of eight medals (and eighth in the overall standings) after four full days of competition.

The Canadian women’s soccer team will play Brazil in the quarterfinals Friday at 1 a.m. P.T.  They closed out group- play with a 1-1 tie against Great Britain.

Weightlifter Maude Charron in the women’s 64-kilogram weight class.
Margaret Mac Neil in the women’s 100m butterfly.

Kylie Masse in women’s 100-metre backstroke.
Women’s 4×100-metre freestyle relay swim team.
Women’s diving: Jennifer Abel and Melissa Citrini-Beaulieu in the three-metre synchronized springboard.

Canada has a team of 371 athletes (225 women and 146 men) in Tokyo. Among the female athletes: Regan Yee of Hazelton who will compete in track in the 3000 Metre Steeplechase and Kayla Moleschi of Williams Lake who is part of the women’s rugby team.

The Olympics run through to August 8th.

 

NHL:

Forward Paul Stastny is staying in Winnipeg. The 35-year-old Stastny has signed a one-year, $3.75-million deal with the Jets.

It looks like Aaron Rodgers will play one more season with the Green Bay Packers. Multiple reports suggest that the two sides are in the final stages of putting together a reworked deal that will keep Rodgers with the Packers in the 2021 season.
