Olympics:
Swimmer Penny Oleksiak of Toronto won a bronze medal in the women’s 200-metre freestyle on day five of competition at the Tokyo Olympics.
It is the sixth career medal for the 21-year-old Oleksiak, making her Canada’s most decorated summer Olympian.
Canadian athletes have nine medals, all from women, two gold, three silver, and four bronze.

–The Canadian men’s volleyball team is 1-2 and still in playoff contention after a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22) win over Iran.
–The Canadian women’s soccer team, coming off a 1-1 tie against Great Britain, will play Brazil in the quarterfinals Friday at 1 a.m. PT.
–American gymnast Simone Biles will not defend her Olympic title. According to USA Gymnastics Biles withdrew from Thursday’s all-around competition to focus on her mental well-being. The decision comes a day after Biles removed herself from the team final following one rotation because she felt she wasn’t mentally ready. The organization said Biles will be evaluated daily before deciding if she will participate in next week’s individual events
–The USA men’s basketball team got back on the winning track after crushing Iran 120-66.
Canada has a team of 371 athletes (225 women and 146 men) in Tokyo. Among the female athletes: Regan Yee of Hazelton who will compete in track in the 3000 Metre Steeplechase and Kayla Moleschi of Williams Lake who is part of the women’s rugby team.
The Olympics run through to August 8th.

The Colorado Avalanche have re-signed captain Gabriel Landeskog to an eight-year deal worth 56-million dollars.
Sniper Alex Ovechkin is staying in Washington after signing a five-year, $47.5 million extension.
The Vancouver Canucks have dealt defenseman Nate Schmidt to the Winnipeg Jets for a third-round draft pick next year. The 30-year-old Schmidt spent one season with Vancouver after three with the Vegas Golden Knights and four with the Washington Capitals before that.
