Prince George housing starts jump in first part of 2015

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says 2015 has been a strong year so far for housing starts in Prince George.

“For the entire quarter, every single month has reported higher than last year’s housing starts levels.” Market Analyst Serena Teakles said “As of the end of March 2015, there was a total of 37 homes that broke ground over that time compared to just 17 last year.”

Teakles says that some of the regions builder’s have told her that incoming changes to the BC Building Code have encouraged a small rush in construction.

“These changes are increasing costs to builders, plus construction costs are rising as well. So the sooner they can get these homes built knowing that the demand will be here this year, the lower their costs.”

Teakles says they expect that trend to continue this year with 190 housing starts being projected in Prince George for 2015.
