PG area to receive part of $2.1 million grant for development

Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, the Prince George Airport, and the Saik’uz First Nation are some of the places in Northern BC receiving funds from the $2.1 million approved by Northern Development Initiative Trust.

“These approvals support our vision of Northern B.C. having growing, energetic communities by investing $2.1 million into crucial infrastructure and housing projects,” said Joel McKay, CEO of Northern Development.

The Ski Club, Airport and Saik’uz community will each get $300,000 for projects aimed to generate funding for local businesses.

Caledonia Nordic Ski Club will be using its funds for its snowmaking expansion.

The project is slated to finish in Fall 2022 and will see eight kilometres being added to the trails, with six new snow guns purchased, and more infrastructure being put in place.

The airport will expand its food services to accommodate things like a restaurant, bar, and bakery.

And the Saik’uz First Nation will be relocating and renovating a building for a cultural centre, creating opportunities for food services and local artisans.

“Other projects allow communities to celebrate and share their culture, history and skills, increasing vibrancy and creating opportunities for economic development and diversification,” said McKay.

10 community projects across the north have been chosen for this funding.

The other projects that received funding were:

  • District of Houston- $60,000 for housing incentives.
  • City of Dawson Creek- $117,937 for improvements to the Knee Borek Aquatic Centre.
  • Town of Smithers- $120,000 for housing incentives.
  • Saulteau First Nations- $135,875 for a commercial hydroponic greenhouse system.
  • Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation- $145,125 for a commercial hydroponic growing system.
