Behind the scenes look at behind the scenes job

Students at the College of New Caledonia’s Medical Laboratory Science Program showed off just what the program can offer.

Today students put on an open house that showcased the different roles that medical lab technicians play in a hospital.

Third Year Semester Tori Giesbrecht says their main job is to collect specimens.

“What we do is we actually take those samples and work with them,” says Giesbrecht, “depending on what’s wrong with you, so if we take a blood sample, it can go into chemistry, an we can get a basic idea of what your body is doing, or we can count your red blood cells or your white blood cells.”

Giesbrecht says the program offers 24 seats for students wanting to enter.

She says the two and a half year diploma course sees students working a year in hospitals.
