School supplies giveaway being hosted to help local families

Families with children going back to school are being offered some help from members of the Light Of The World Church.

Church community members have collected over 20 backpacks and various school supplies that they will be offering to families in need tomorrow (Saturday) at noon at 1953 Gorse St in front of Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

Co-Organizer of the backpack giveaway, Salvador Garcia, says he and other community members are just hoping to help out local families that have fallen on tough times.

“I know a lot of kids were home last year, mine included because of the pandemic and now everyone is going back to school and I know with the pandemic the economy is pretty hard, some people lost their jobs, some may have taken a pay cut and I as a family man myself know how expensive it can be to buy school supplies for our kids,” Garcia said.

Garcia studied a range of back-to-school supply lists from grade schools all over the community and gathered a range of school supplies including pencils, pens, erasers, and dividers to offer the community.

“We just thought, maybe this could help out in one way or another whether and relieve some stress off of a mother or father whether they’re married or single either way to just take a little weight off during these stressful times.”

A local painting business, IC Expert Painting reached out and donated a variety of school supplies to the event.

The program will be starting at noon and will run until supplies run out.

Additionally, Garcia and his son are barbers and will be offering free haircuts to boys that stop by.

Backpack and school supply donations are still being accepted, to make a donation visit the Light of the World Church Facebook page.
