Federal Candidates snub BC Assembly of First Nations

The BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) Annual General Meeting begins today (September 14) and goes until Thursday, but Chief Terry Teegee is disappointed in the Federal Election candidates not taking part.

In a last-minute update, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh responded saying that he would attend through a ZOOM call on Thursday (September 16).

“They have all paid a great deal of lip service to Indigenous issues, but are unwilling to actually appear before the leadership of First Nations in BC. If they can’t spend ten minutes addressing these issues during the election, what kind of attention will they pay to reconciliation once they are elected?” said Teegee.

“I’m glad that he (Singh) did come out and state that he was apologetic of the invite and not coming to the meeting, but it seems he and his campaign team has had a change of heart.”

Teegee said that the door was still open for the other candidates to reach out, and hopes they can answer his questions on how they’ll address the many Indigenous issues in Canada.
