David Douglas Botanical Garden Society celebrates 30th birthday

The David Douglas Botanical Garden Society celebrates 30 Years in Prince George tomorrow (Sunday).

At 2:00 pm, the Society will be celebrating the occasion with the official opening of the Arbour and Sculpture located at the entrance to the Phase 1 Educational Display Garden.

Dr. Geoff Payne – Interim President and Interim Chancellor of UNBC, Mayor Lyn Hall – City of Prince George, First Nation representatives, will be in attendance as well as many of the founding members of the Society.

The garden is situated at UNBC and the society was first incorporated in November 1991 as a non-profit organization with registered charitable status.

Its mission was to establish and maintain an aesthetically pleasing botanical garden in partnership with UNBC; provide horticultural and arboricultural education for the public; advance horticultural and arboricultural knowledge, and promote the use of plant material that is viable in the North.

The Phase I Educational Display Garden was built and maintained by volunteers and was developed on 1.6 hectares and is wheelchair accessible, free, and open to all, year-round.

The Garden has now been completed with the addition of the Arbour and Sculpture, it provides visitors with residents with an area to enjoy the outdoors offered in Prince George.
