“Burdening businesses with another tax right now is shortsighted,”: Chamber CEO on paid sick leave

The CEO of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce would like to see the province delay the implementation of paid sick leave.

Three options have been developed by the province that covers the minimum number of days: three, five, and 10, and residents can have their say until October 25th.

Similar to the $15/hour minimum wage, Todd Corrigall believes this is being pushed along too soon.

“I think we need to fully realize the financial impacts of the pandemic and the results on businesses. The last thing we need to do is implement another tax or fee bourn by business that is going to result in people losing their jobs.”

“To burden business with another tax or fee at this point is very short-sighted. We still have to remember the Employer’s Health Tax that is still in place so we can’t continue to burden small business.”

Between August 5th and September 14th, over 26,000 surveys were completed by workers and employers – a sample size Corrigall believes is too small.

“There should be engagement with approximately 100,000 small or medium-sized businesses to help get to that piece. But more importantly, we are coming out of a very challenging economic time for every business.”
