WHL (PG Cougars)

The curtain opens on the Prince George Cougars regular season tonight (Saturday).

The Cougars start with a home game against the Kamloops Blazers at 7:00 at CN Centre.

Prince George finished 2-2 in the pre-season.

The Cats are carrying 25 players, three goalies, eight defencemen, and 14 forwards.

Six of the players are rookies and four are 20-year-olds (one over the limit); goalie Taylor Gauthier, defenceman Majid Kaddoura plus forwards Jonny Hooker, and Connor Bowie.

Hooker has been named the 27th Captain in franchise history.

There are 3 P.G. boys on the team: defenceman Aiden Reeves and forwards Caden Brown and Fischer O’Brien.

BCHL (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings have dealt forward Corey Cunningham to the Trail Smoke Eaters for future considerations.

The PG Spruce Kings conclude their pre-season with a home game Sunday afternoon at 3:00 against the Merritt Centennials.

The Spruce Kings open their regular season against the Centennials on Friday (October 8th) in Merritt.

Prince George will also play the Warriors in West Kelowna on October 9th before hosting Merritt October 15th and 16th.

BC Elite Hockey League:
(Cariboo Cougars & Northern Capitals)

(U18AAA )

The (1-1) U18 Cariboo Cougars host the (1-0-1) Valley West Giants today (Saturday) at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 12:45 p.m. at Kin 1.

Fraser Valley Rush  3  Northern Capitals  2  (in Surrey)

The (2-1) Northern Capitals play the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers this afternoon at 3:45 and the Vancouver Island Seals Sunday morning at 9 with both of those games in Surrey.

The Canucks host the Winnipeg Jets in their next exhibition game Sunday afternoon at 4:00.

The same teams play again at noon today at Masich Place.

The rematch between the two teams will be played tonight at 6:00 at Masich place.

The UNBC men have four losses and three ties after seven games while the UNBC women have one tie and six losses.

The UNBC soccer teams have just five games remaining including today. The Timberwolves visit Fraser Valley October 15th and 17th before hosting Thompson Rivers October 23rd and 24th (at Masich Place starting at noon for the women and 2:15 for the men).

 

MLB: (Final weekend of the regular season)

The (89-71) Jays host Baltimore again today and Sunday at noon (PT) to conclude the regular season.

Toronto is tied with Seattle, one game behind Boston for the second A.L. wild-card spot. The Yankees hold down the first wild-card berth by a game over the Red Sox and by two over the Blue Jays and Mariners.

The Red Sox visit Washington this afternoon at 1:00 and Sunday at noon.

The Mariners visit the LA Angels tonight at 6:00 and Sunday at noon.

The Yankees host Tampa Bay today at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday at noon.

Triple-A Baseball:

Jared Young of Prince George is batting .254 since getting called up to AAA with the Iowa Cubs. The 26-year-old first baseman has 5 homers and 18 RBI’s in 37 games.

The Iowa Cubs season ends on Sunday.

 

CFL: (Week 9)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers  30  B.C. Lions  9

The Lions don’t play again until Saturday, October 16th when they host Calgary.

There are a pair of CFL games today (Saturday): Montreal at Hamilton (1:00) followed by Saskatchewan at Calgary (4:00)

Standings:

West: Winnipeg 7-1, Saskatchewan 5-2, B.C. 4-4, Edmonton and Calgary 2-5
East:  Hamilton and Toronto 4-3, Montreal 2-4, and Ottawa 2-5.

There are 14 Sunday games in the NFL including Seattle at San Francisco, Arizona at LA Rams and Tampa Bay at New England.

Five teams have a perfect 3-0 record: LA Rams, Arizona, and Carolina in the NFC plus Denver, and Las Vegas in the AFC.

Five teams remain winless including Jacksonville at 0-4. Teams sitting at 0-3 include: New York Jets and Indianapolis in the AFC plus Detroit, and New York Giants in the NFC.
