Ron Brent Elementary students unveil “Dakelh Ways of Knowing” mural

A grade 4/5 class at Ron Brent Elementary School is the first within School District 57 to implement the “Dakelh Ways of Knowing”

The learning model is focused on concepts like Truth and Honesty, Responsibility, Respect, Self-Identity, and Community.

From there, the students determined what animals would best represent each way of knowing, and a mural was created for the entire classroom to see.

Titus is one of several student researchers who worked on the project and described what the whole experience was like.

“I found it was challenging to find the perfect animal for each one of the Ways of Knowing and it was challenging to understand and make it so each one of these fit them.”

“The bees fit community very well because they work together and help each other in their colonies as we do in our communities.”

The learning model was founded by the school board in collaboration with Elders several years ago.

Classroom teacher Ashley Serai, who recently moved to the northern capitals was seeking more knowledge about local Indigenous history and began a collaboration with Kelsey MacDonald who is SD 57’s resource teacher in the Indigenous education department.
