Cougars get a victory in Kelowna, despite injury to their starting goalie

The Prince George Cougars can thank their goaltending tandem of Tyler Brennan and Taylor Gauthier for their first win in five tries this season against the Kelowna Rockets.

The pair combined to make 37 saves as the Cougars beat the Rockets 3-2 before 4,062 fans at Prospera Place.

Kelowna outshot Prince George 39-22, including 22-2 in the third.

The 18-year-old Brennan was credited with the win, as he stopped 19 of 20 shots through 43 minutes of work.

He left the game in the third period due to a lower body injury and was replaced by the 20-year-old Gauthier, who blocked 18 of 19 shots in just under 17 minutes of work.

Connor Bowie, Craig Armstrong, and Viliam Kmec supplied the offence for the Cougars, who led 3-1 after 40 minutes after scoring two unanswered goals in the second.

Kmec finished with a pair of points (1g-1a) and was named the game’s first star.

“That was a real gutsy road win and pretty much as consistent as a game we played all season,” said Cougars’ Associate Coach Josh Dixon. “We got a good start, went through some adversity as we had to kill some penalties and be in a situation we haven’t been in a lot and that’s protect a lead on the road. It was a good growing experience for our group.”

Kelowna was 1/6 on the power-play while Prince George went 0/1.

The Cougars are 4-8 on the road, and 5-6 at home for an overall record of 9-14.

Prince George is 7th in the Western Conference standings, a point ahead of Victoria and three in front of Tri-City and Spokane.

Friday was the Cougars first win against the Rockets since May 4th, 2021.
