WHL:

The Prince George Cougars had a successful weekend with back-to-back victories.

The Cougars beat the Rockets 3-2 Friday in Kelowna and followed that up with a 3-2 win over Kamloops on Saturday at CN Centre.

Taylor Gauthier made 48 saves and Ethan Samson scored twice to lead the Cougars before a sell-out crowd of 2,951 at CN Centre.

Samson opened the scoring 4:07 into the first period with the Teddy Bear Toss goal and later tallied the unassisted winner at 6:09 of the third to snap a 2-2 tie.

Kamloops outshot Prince George 50-26, including 19-9 in the third.

The (10-14) Cougars host the (13-10-1) Vancouver Giants Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tyler Brennan and Taylor Gauthier combined to make 37 saves before 4,062 fans at Prospera Place.

Kelowna outshot Prince George 39-22, including 22-2 in the third.

The 18-year-old Brennan stopped 19 of 20 shots through 43 minutes of work before leaving the game due to a lower-body injury.

He is day-to-day.

Brennan was replaced by the 20-year-old Gauthier, who blocked 18 of 19 shots in just under 17 minutes of work.

The Prince George Spruce Kings lost 4-3 to the Cranbrook Bucks Saturday in OT, however, the Spruce Kings took five out of a possible six points in three straight home games against Cranbrook.

Tyson Dyck scored 26 seconds into overtime for the Bucks before 626 fans at the RMCA.

NHL: (5 Sunday games)  Vancouver was the only Canadian team in action.

The (12-15-2) Canucks improved to 4-0 under new head coach Bruce Boudreau.

Vancouver will conclude a 6-game homestand Tuesday night at 7:00 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The next three games for the Calgary Flames have been postponed because six of their players and one staff member have entered the NHL:’s COVID-19 protocol.

Okanagan Rockets  7  U-18 Cariboo Cougars  2  (Sunday)

Okanagan Rockets  6  U-18 Cariboo Cougars  1  (Saturday)

The (9-9-1-1) U-18 Cougars are in fifth place in the 10-team division, one point ahead of the (8-7-1-2) Rockets.

Cariboo is idle until they host (6-12-0-2) South Island on Jan 8th (4:30 PM) and 9th (7:15 AM) at Kin 1.

The (10-7-0-1) U-17 Cougars are in 6th place, as they pulled even in points with the 5th-place (10-7-1) Rockets.

The U-17 Cats will be back in action this coming weekend when they host the (12-4-1-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds. Games are scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. (Kin 1) and Sunday at 12:45 p.m. (CN Centre).

Volleyball:

The Duchess Park Condors captured gold at the provincial double-A boys volleyball championship in Victoria.

The Condors, led by tournament MVP Chris Zimmerman, beat Langley Christian 3-1 (22-25, 25-10, 25-19, 25-21) in the final on Saturday.

College Heights ended up 6th.

The Cedars Christian Eagles earned bronze at the provincial single-A boys volleyball championship in Nanaimo.

The Eagles got by Nanaimo Christian three games to one in the third-place game.

 

 

CFL: (108th Grey Cup in Hamilton)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers  33  Hamilton Tiger-Cats  25  (OT)

Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros was named Grey Cup MVP.

The Blue Bombers are the first Grey Cup repeat champions since the Montreal Alouettes in 2009 and 10.

The Tiger-Cats have not won a CFL championship game since 1999.
