Northern BC post secondary institutes push forward with in person learning

UNBC is already underway with some in person classes starting today (January 17th), and CNC started last week, but other post secondary institutes are running into issues.

Simon Fraser University is planning to return to classes starting next week, but a petition with over 2,500 signatures to delay in person classes has been making the rounds.

UBC has delayed it’s in person classes until at least February 7th.

UNBC Interim President Geoff Payne wrote a message on January 10th, noting that there would be an end to the temporary online learning transition at the end of last week.

He also said some courses would be offered in alternate modes of delivery until January 28th.

Around 70% of UNBC’s courses were in person last semester, and Payne said the goal was to reach a similar percentage.

CNC started in person classes on January 10th, and President Dennis Johnson said there are definitely some regional differences.

“For the most part, students, and staff, and faculty are happy to come to class. Certainly there’s concerns, but we’re not seeing anything at the level of a petition or large outcry.”

He added that CNC does offer some online courses, but not because of the pandemic.

“We’re not experts on how to manage the pandemic, so we’ve aligned ourselves, and taken the advice of the provincial health office and the provincial authorities, and so far that’s been working very well,” said Johnson.
