Prince George-Valemount MLA re-introduces bill for public defibrillator access

Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond has re-introduced a private member’s bill that could help save lives in British Columba.

The Defibrillator Public Access Act would make automated external defibrillators (AED) mandatory in public buildings.

It also establishes requirements related to signage, maintenance, and registration, as well as clarifies civil liability.

“This year, at least 7,000 British Columbians could experience sudden cardiac arrest, and without access to an AED, they only have a 10 per cent chance of survival,” Bond said.

“Every minute counts, when responding to a sudden cardiac arrest, and it can affect anyone, anywhere, and at any time, often without warning.”

Additionally the AEDs would be registered with BC Emergency Health Services and linked to the ambulance dispatch information system so dispatchers can direct callers to the nearest AED.

“Defibrillator access is deeply important to my family and British Columbians across the province,” Bond added.

“With this legislation, we can address the barriers that exist for public access to AEDs and save thousands of lives here in British Columbia.”
