PG City Council approves joint-bid to host 2026 BC 55+ Games with Quesnel

While Prince George is welcoming thousands of young athletes for the BC Summer Games next month (July 21-24), the city could be welcoming older athletes in four years.

Prince George City Council has approved a joint bid with Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District to host the 2026 BC 55+ Games.

“This partnership with Quesnel, you don’t see that very often,” said Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall.

“You see one community going after it, and then you hope the outlying communities will participate. I think this is going to garner a tremendous amount of interest for both communities.”

According to a report from Prince George Director of Recreation and Events Andy Beesley, the City of Prince George’s contribution to hosting the games would be $52,000 cash plus $48,000 value-in-kind contributions to be funded from the Major Events Reserve.

The report also estimates the economic return to the city to be $3.5 million, based on PG hosting two-thirds of the events.

The North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee recommended the City of Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District approve the application as well two weeks ago.
