BC Summer Games:

Two-time Olympic Medalist Meryeta O’Dine lit the torch Thursday night during the opening ceremonies to officially start the BC Summer Games in Prince George.

Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dolleen Logan and Elder Darlene McIntosh started by welcoming the athletes to the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh.

BC Games Host Society President Renee McCloskey was among the speakers and said they’re feeling a great sense of excitement.

“You’re seeing the kid’s faces, you can feel it in the air,” stated McCloskey.

About 2,800 athletes are participating in 18 sports with the competition to wrap up Sunday at noon.

CFL: (Week 7)

B.C. Lions  17  Hamilton Tiger-Cats  12

The Lions improved to 4-1, tied with Calgary for second in the West behind 6-0 Winnipeg.

(Saskatchewan also has four wins but the Riders have suffered two losses)

The Tiger-Cats slipped to 1-5.

Montreal Alouettes  40  Ottawa Redblacks  33

The Als are 2-4 while the Redblacks stay winless at 0-6.

Western teams are a combined 20-8 while Eastern teams are a combined 5-17.

The Friday night game in the CFL (6:00 PT) has Winnipeg at (2-4) Edmonton.

Hockey:

Forward Connor Bowie, who spent the last four seasons with the Prince George Cougars, has committed to play for Ryerson University (located in Toronto) in the U-Sports Men’s Hockey League.

The 21-year-old Fort St. John product played 222 games with the Cougars and posted a total of 69 points, including 40 goals.

MLB:

The Toronto Blue Jays return to action following the All-Star break and play tonight (Friday) against the (48-45) Red Sox in Boston.

The Jays are 50-43 after 93 of 162 games and 4-1 since firing manager Charlie Montoyo and replacing him with bench coach John Schneider.

Toronto is 3rd in the AL East and sitting in the 3rd and final wild-card spot, a game behind the (51-42) Seattle Mariners, who have won 14 in a row.
