Charge approved against RCMP Officer in connection with 2021 vehicle accident

The BC Prosecution Service has approved one charge of driving without due care and attention against North District RCMP Cst. Jay Barban.

The charge is in connection to a motor vehicle incident that reportedly occurred near Bear Lake on August 19th, 2021.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC filed for consideration of charges in July 2022.

It was reported that, on August 19th, 2021, an RCMP officer driving an unmarked police SUV was involved in a collision with a blue Kia Rio on Highway 97 near Industrial Way in Bear Lake.

The female driver of the Kia was taken to hospital with what were believed to be minor injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC was notified by the affected person on April 29th, 2022, at which time the injuries were confirmed to meet the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act.

The first court appearance on this matter is schedule for September 21st, 2022 in Prince George Provincial Court.
