Local organizations team up for a bra donation campaign, begins Friday

United Way and Modern Match Lingerie have teamed up to collect new and lightly used bras for local women who cannot afford them.

Starting Friday (October 7), local women are being encouraged to drop off new, or lightly used and washed bras at 1552 Quinn Street between 11:00 and 6:00, where they will receive a thank you gift.

United Way and Modern Match Lingerie say this campaign will help fill needs within the community, especially helping women who have escaped domestic violence.

“Women escaping a life of abuse often leave with just the clothes on their back. And if they’re seeking refuge with children, their main priority is getting their children to safety, leaving their own needs on the back burner. For a lot of women, bras are a necessity but a cost they can’t financially afford, so they suffer without,” said Shauna Allan, Founder, CEO of Modern Match Lingerie.

Modern Match Lingerie will be donating $1 to the cause for every sale made in October.

“We are thrilled to partner with Modern Match Lingerie for the Worthy Warriors campaign! Shauna and her team are such a community-driven group, and we are honoured to continue our partnership in bringing resources where they are needed in our local community,” said Trista Spencer, Executive Director, United Way of Northern BC.

“Very often, it’s the simplest things that help bring a sense of stability in our lives…something like being able to put a bra on and feel ready for the day can make a big difference to someone who is feeling vulnerable.”

Last year, between donations of money and used bras, over 1000 were collected for women in need.

This year, the organizations say they want to double that number.

They also noted that this donation drive helps prevent perfectly good clothing from ending up in the landfill.
