“Meet you at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park”

Prince George City Council has voted 8-1 to change the name of Fort George Park to Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

Councillor Murry Krause brought forward the recommendation saying it is a way to acknowledge Prince George’s history.

“it’s not about me, it’s not about council it’s about Lheidli T’enneh, this has been a long time coming and we had about three years of conversations so I am very excited”

Councillor Albert Koehler was the lone councillor not in favour fearing backlash and there being little education on the issue.

“it would have been nice to have more consultation and get our community more involved and get their ideas on all of this and buy in on this change.

Koehler would have also liked the name to be different.

“I think naming a park for the benefit of the Lheidli T’enneh would have been a nice thing but the word memorial carries at least for me something sad, something negative”

Along with the name change, the Lheidli T’enneh flag will be waved at city hall.

The name change comes on the heels of National Aboriginal Day which takes place on June 21st.
