North Central Badminton Academy dissolving after 25 years

The final birdie will fly on March 6th.

The North Central Badminton Academy (NCBA) board has unanimously passed a motion to dissolve their society and club this spring.

The group hosted the North Central Tournament and BC Winter Games Zone 8 trials every year and would send competitors to other events across the province.

“It is a one-person show, and that would be me. I am now getting into the retirement years… it is just time,” Lisa Davison, the NCBA’s Founder, Head Coach, and Program Coordinator told My PG Now.

She started the NCBA in 1998 and has been there throughout its entire lifespan, passionately sharing the sport with anyone who would pick up a racket.

“I met some of the most amazing kids ever,” she said. “I look at what they are doing now, a lot of them are in their 30’s and it is just bizarre to just look back at what amazing adults they are.”

“I made friends with the families… it is a very family-like group of people.”

Looking back on the NCBA’s legacy, Davison said she is thankful for all the opportunities that were presented to her, her family, and the people she coached.

“My first son was in the baby buggy when I was first coaching. He would come with me while the other one was on the court learning how to play, they grew up with it. I grew up with it.”

“I have done so much through this sport and with the club,” she said, listing the BC Winter Games, coaching team BC at national events, and hosting Olympians in Prince George.

One of the group’s other highlights included bringing Olympians and Team Canada members to Prince George for exhibitions and camps.

“I’m not sad,” Davison said, looking forward. “When I reflect, I get happy-sad, because there has been some really cool things. But it has not been a sad moment at all, it has been an accomplishment.”

The final program session will be on March 6th, and the society will officially reach its conclusion on May 31st.

NCBA hopes that another group will absorb youth lessons and the North Central Tournament in Prince George.
