Nearly 350 winter warriors to participate in 2023 Iceman

8 kilometers on skis, a 10 kilometer run, 12 laps of the Ice Oval, five more kilometers on foot, and 800 meters in the pool.

Sound fun? Well, for 339 people participating in this weekend’s Iceman, at least one part of that is a perfect way to spend a Sunday – and 39 of them will tackle all five legs back-to-back as solo athletes.

“The Iceman is the ultimate winter challenge,” Melissa Martinson, the Iceman Society Chair told My PG Now.

The full event is nearly 30 kilometers of skiing, skating, swimming and running.

People tackle the Iceman in teams, dividing the different legs between one another, but every year there are those who tackle the event solo.

Martinson said the fasted solo athletes can finish that in a little under two hours every year.

She is expecting “tons of spectators” this year.

“Everyone likes to be at Otway right off the start, the start is the most exciting part and is where the most people are.”

This year, she said there will be a mass start at 10:00am at Otway, with solo athletes and teams in both the adult and junior brackets all beginning the race at the same time.

“Tons of spectators there, we see some spectators along the 10km route, lots at the oval and of course at the Aquatic Centre.”
