ANTON COMMENTS ON BC’S DISTRACTED DRIVING CONSULTATION

90 percent of people who participated in BC’s distracted driving consultation believe the penalties need to be more severe.

Minister of Justice, Suzanne Anton spoke at a conference call Today and says many people believe the fine structure needs to change.

“Some people say 200 dollars, some people say 500 dollars, some say over 750 dollars, the vast majority of respondents say the numbers need to go up.”

Anton also went on to say the lack of response in the north needs to change.

“Only about 5 percent of the feedback has come from the northern communities so if you are in Prince George, Dawson Creek, Terrace, Mackenzie, Prince Rupert or any other community up north please do add your voice.”

17 percent of fatal distracted driving fatalities occur in Northern BC.

The consultation runs until July 16th and to add your voice visit gov.bc.ca/distracteddriving or tweet @RoadSafetyBC using the #distractedbc hash-tag.
