Supportive housing at Fraser Inn moving on to next steps

BC Housing is looking to provide more supportive housing in Prince George.

The Crown corporation is eyeing purchasing the Fraser Inn and Direct Art to build 30 units of supportive housing, pending rezoning of the properties.

At Monday’s meeting, Prince George City Council gave the first and second readings of a bylaw to rezone 1616 Queensway and 1650 Queensway to allow the supportive housing.

“There is a need in the community and BC Housing has stepped up,” said Councillor Brian Skakun.

“They’re acquiring property, they’re trying to meet this ever growing need of different types of supportive housing that we need in our community.”

“The great thing about this is we can have housing but it’s supportive housing,” said Councillor Ron Polillo.

“That is key to it’s success, and we think that is a big win from BC Housing.”

Consideration of the Final Reading of the rezoning bylaw will be withheld until several conditions are met, including a traffic impact analysis.

In addition, the province, through BC Housing, has purchased a building at 1007 3rd Avenue, to provide 22 homes with support services.

That building will offer people experiencing homelessness comfortable and safe homes where they can access support services, as well as educational and employment training.
