Cell Phone use still a major issue within PG and BC schools

Students and teachers within School District 57 in Prince George are often struggling with what is and is not allowed for cell phone use.

Chair, Tony Cable outlines the current policy.

“During instruction time use of these devices shall be at the discretion of the classroom teacher or supervisor and use of these devices out of class time is at the discretion of the school.”

Cable adds College Heights Secondary School currently has an Inappropriate use of Electronic Communications policy at it’s facility.

“It includes the use of all cell phones, camera phones, Ipod, mp3 players during class time when the teacher requests that such devices may not be used by students.”

However while cell phones are currently not allowed for use in classroom, they are exploring the idea of allowing two other devices.

“We’re looking at new policies to allow tablets and Ipad’s to be used in the classroom, but again making sure there are strict regulations and in-use policies and so on.”

As of now, no uniform policy on school cell phone use exists in BC.
