Canadian Diabetes Association pushing for sugary drink tax

The link between sugary drinks and Type 2 diabetes seems to be gaining steam.

The Canadian Diabetes Association is pushing for a sugary drink tax from Ottawa.

Director of Government of Relations, Serge Corbeil says diabetes has become very costly in B.C.

“Estimated impact of diabetes in the province is around 440 thousand people and it’s costing the provincial health care system 1.6 billion dollars a year.”

Corbeil says other countries have had success with such a tax.

“France has a cola tax with consumption going down 3 percent, countries like Hungary, Finland and Mexico have had a positive experience with such a tax.”

According to the CDA three to five sugary drinks a day is considered excessive.

Corbeil says the link between Type 2 diabetes and sugary drinks is so clear that now is a good time to push the issue with a federal election set for the fall.
