Bear hunting becoming a hot topic in BC

The deaths of Cecil the Lion and a grizzly bear kill caught on tape have sparked calls to end trophy hunting in BC.

“The over-arching objective, especially when it comes to grizzly bears and large carnivores is to ensure an intact habitat for the next 30 to 40 years, so these animals don’t disappear.” said BC Wildlife Fed Priority Program Manager Jesse Zeman

“In terms of some of the videos that have been aired. That’s certainly not consistent with what one would call ethical hunting, and it’s certainly not representative of hunting.”

Many professional hunters believe it is humane and justifiable as many make use of most or all of the bear after it’s death.

The province issues over 3,000 tags for bear hunting every year.

The grizzly bear hunt is already under-way in Prince George.
