Hart Highlands Sewer Upgrade in the Works

A sewer system upgrade could be coming to the Killarney-Sussex-Wildwood area of the Hart Highlands.

The project, which could cost almost $2-million, would connect the neighborhoods’ private septic systems to the rest of the city with one catch: the benefiting residents have to pay for it.

“There is a Residents Meeting that all of the residents are invited to come to” said Director of Public Works Gina Layte-Liston. “That is their opportunity to bring any questions to the working group.”

Residents will get to vote on whether or not they want to pay for the project.

“They choose whether or not they wish to vote yes or no” said Layte-Liston. “From there, the project is completed and then that amount is divided between those property owners and then there’s a pay-back that occurs over time.”

At least 50% of residents have to vote in favour of the project for it to pass.

If approved, construction would likely begin in 2016 and the project could be completed by the following year.
