UNBC Introduces All-Gender Restrooms

Students at UNBC are taking steps to make the campus more welcoming.

New signs have been installed on the University’s single occupant washrooms, designating them as gender neutral.

“The fact that we changed the signs to say that all genders are welcome here is just signifying we recognize there are people who don’t identify with the gender binary” said Student Senator Angela Kehler.

The news comes on the same day UNBC was ranked #1 by Maclean’s Magazine for undergraduate universities in the country.

Kehler says it’s a small change that makes a big difference.

“They have a safe place where they are welcome” said Kehler. “They don’t have to think about ‘which washroom am I going into? and what is the stigma attached with going into that washroom?’ it just makes it a bit easier for them.”

She says other universities across Canada are adopting similar changes to be more welcoming to students of all gender identities.
