Are weekly earnings in BC heading south?

Weekly earnings in Canada are heading in the wrong direction.

Stats Canada Labour Market Analyst, Andrew Fields says almost every province saw a decrease.

“Earnings declined in every province except for Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. The national average was a decline of 0.7 percent but it looks like BC did a little bit worse month to month.”

Fields adds the weekly earnings in BC are slightly lower than the rest of Canada.

He says it was 904 dollars compared to the national average of 947.

Earnings remained the highest in the Mining, Oil and Gas sector at 1720 dollars, a 12 percent decline from last year.

The Northwest Territories took top spot in that category at 1392 dollars as of August 1st.

4 thousand fewer people were on a payroll in BC compared to a 58 thousand decline across Canada during the same period.
