A First Nations’ artist wants to reintroduce indigenous names for Canadian Landmarks.
UNBC’s Writer in Residence Janet Rogers will be hosting a lecture on the value of reinstating First Nations place names this Thursday.
“When we are aware of what the original place names are of the territories that we live and work and play on everyday of our lives, we are able to gain a greater and deeper meaning of those territories” said Rogers.
The lecture will also be discuss the recent renaming of Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.
“With the knowledge of indigenous place names, they are always referencing the land themselves. Whereas colonial place names always reference people.” said Rogers. “That’s one specific history. When we reintroduce indigenous place names, that is a history we can all share.”
The event is part of UNBC’s Anthropology in our Backyard lecture series.
The lecture begins at 7PM on Thursday in room 7-158 at UNBC.
