City Reps Join Christy Clark’s Chinese Trade Mission

Two representatives from the City of Prince George are back after a whirlwind trade mission to China.

Manager of Economic Development Melissa Barcellos says the opportunity came about just after this year’s UBCM meeting, when City staff met with International Trade Minister Teresa Wat.

“We’re exploring opportunities to work with the province to encourage opportunities for foreign direct investment in Prince George, and following that meeting, Teresa Wat actually invited the City to attend a trade delegation with Christy Clark in China.”

Barcellos and City Manager Kathleen Soltis participated in several meeting with business officials in 3 large cities from October 30 to November 7.

A local businessman also arranged 5 memorandums of understanding with his Chinese contacts during the trip.

But she warns they aren’t necessarily a guarantee of future business…

“Typically the memorandums of understanding have been signed with Chinese governments and businesses. It’s just kind of their standard for doing business, and what you have to do if you want to be working with China in the future.”

The MOUs focused on the education, transportation, forest products, and hospitality industries.

Mayor Hall signed a MOU with visiting representatives from Suzhou City earlier this year.
